In 2005 Dr. Leighton helped create the BS Forestry degree at Salish Kootenai College, the first and only such degree at a Tribal College. Since then, he has continued to teach and has served as a Department Chair and Dean, as well as running the Center for Tribal Research and Education in Ecosystem Sciences (TREES). Leighton was a member of IFMAT III and co-chair of IFMAT IV.
