I am Lalita, an international student from India pursuing a master’s degree in forestry and natural resources at the University of Georgia. I am passionate about social development and improving people's lives. My research examines the relationship between the structure and condition of trees and adult depression rate in urban cities in the USA.
My passion for social development led me to a 17+ year career as a social development worker in India, following my undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering. I have worked with NGOs and government agencies to help rural women become financially independent, improve their quality of life, manage their natural resources, build the capacity of community institutions and leaders, and enhance interpersonal skills and group dynamics through facilitating in team and human interaction laboratory. I have also expanded my knowledge of mental health through various counseling and therapy courses.
I believe that my work has the potential to make a significant contribution to our understanding of the relationship between mental health and forest health. Understanding the relationship between tree conditions and depression could inform urban planning and policy decisions while demonstrating additional functional benefits of urban trees to the public. Urban planners could prioritize tree maintenance in areas with high rates of depression or mental health issues. This research will highlight the importance of environmental health in mental health outcomes.
I am excited to share my research and insights with you at this convention. I believe that by working together, we can create a more sustainable and healthier world for all.
