Derek Pierson is a research soil scientist with the US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station. As a part of the Forest and Woodland Ecosystems program, Derek's research focuses on soil carbon and nutrient cycling in natural and disturbed ecosystems, with an emphasis on biochar, soil carbon stabilization, post-wildfire recovery, improvements in earth system modelling, and refined land management techniques. Derek received a Ph.D. in Soil Science from Oregon State University, a M.S. in Forest Science from Colorado State University, and he has been with the Rocky Mountain Research Station in various capacities for over 15 years.
