Eastern white pine remains a very profitable timber species for landowners in Virginia. This study seeks to inquire if preforming precommercial thinning's could improve the yield and value for these landowners, and to provide evidence for the use of this silvicultural practice.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion participants will be able to discuss how precommercial thinning's allow for the productivity of eastern white pine sites to increase greatly, providing greater value to the landowners.
Participants will be able to determine if the practice for preforming precommercial thinning's should be studied for other species in different environments. The eastern white pine population experiences highly favorable site conditions in southwestern Virginia, perhaps similar trends noticed during this case study could be found in other species in different locations.
