Forester II Research & Demonstration Manager -Retired CAL FIRE- Jackson Demonstation State Forest Willits, California, United States
The presentation will survey the results of a century’s changing management on coastal redwood forests at Jackson Demonstration State Forest. It will draw on the forest’s research and demonstrations to illustrate redwood silviculture. Now the expanded forest management goals reflect knowledge of ecosystem complexity as well as societal expectations.
Learning Objectives:
survey the silvics of major coastal redwood forest species and how they relate to the major silvicultural systems. Presentation will draw from recent research findings.
describe how the evolution of harvesting technology and shifting regulations influence sustained yield and forest composition.
recognize that expanded goals that include climate and fire adaption can be incorporated in actively managed coast redwood forests. Some initial successes and challenges will be discussed.
incorporate lessons from Jackson Demonstration State Forest that the participant will find be relevant to other ownerships and forest types.
