Storing More Carbon in Forests through Improved Forest Management: a New England Case Study

Private forestland will play a critical role in implementing natural climate solutions in the U.S. Here, we present a case study modeling the carbon impacts of implementing forest management that emphasizes wildlife habitat, carbon, and timber production as coequal goals on private timberland in New England.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand one potential model for increasing carbon storage on private timberlands while producing timber and maintaining other forest values, such as wildlife habitat. This will help foresters understand and apply the “carbon AND” paradigm, whereby carbon is added to the multiple factors foresters already balance when managing forests.
  • Demonstrate better understanding of carbon-based growth and yield modeling, the focus of our analytical methods, as well as logistical constraints that restrict application of IFM for financial purposes, and how those constraints may be overcome.
  • Understand how carbon markets can help diversify the income streams from, and therefore silvicultural options available for, forest management.
  • Recognize the untapped potential for private forest land in the U.S. to make an increased contribution to climate mitigation.
