Resilience is a core ecological concept that has evolved multiple meanings including persistence, recovery, and adaptability. We conducted a systematic literature review to understand how resilience is conceptualized in various contexts. How resilience was defined varied with region and disturbance type. Recovery and persistence were the most common resilience conceptualizations.
Learning Objectives:
Distinguish between three conceptualizations of resilience including persistence, recovery, and adaptability.
Understand how resilience is conceptualized with respect to region, the disturbance under study, and the metrics used to measure resilience.
Identify resilience metrics that capture the different conceptualizations of resilience.
