Global Forest Watch (GFW) is the premier open-source platform used to monitor both global and regional deforestation in near-real time. We collaborated with GFW developers and users to study the way GFW visualizes forests and to suggest ways to better incorporate the views of the people living in them.
Learning Objectives:
list the historical phases of commodification, capitalization, globalization, and glocalization in forest visualization
define the political problems with "zooming" as a mode of visualization
appreciate the stories and needs of specific users of global forest visualization tools around the world
list rhetorical approaches that help put people (and other sub-canopy parts of forest) back in the picture of forests
