Mature and old-growth forest classification and inventory: update and next steps for federal lands

We will present and discuss the recently completed mature and old-growth classification and inventory on lands managed by the USDA Forest Service and the DOI Bureau of Land Management, including the challenge of defining these forests, the regionally-relevant approach selected, our results, and work identifying threats to these forests.

Learning Objectives:

  • The participant will have a better understanding of the first nationwide inventory of mature and old-growth forests on USFS and BLM lands.
  • Upon completion of the session, the participant will have a better understanding of how rates of carbon sequestration can be used to classify forest development and inventory mature and old-growth forests.
  • Upon completion, participants will have a better understanding of a new statistical approach to classifying mature forests based on old-growth structural attributes.
  • Upon completion, participants will have a better understanding of the next steps needed to assess risk and potential management strategies to conserve and restore mature and old-growth forests.
  • Upon completion, participants will know more peer-reviewed literature currently in review or completed to support the mature and old-growth classification and inventory.
