Growing up in Chicago, Irland spent summers in Wisconsin on a scout camp staff. He first hiked the Maine woods in the late 1960s. He served in the Department of Conservation and as State Economist, and is now a semi-retired consultant. He participated in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the National Assessment on Climate Change, in addition attending 3 UN Global Climate and Forest Congresses. He is active in Maine in interpreting forest carbon and climate change issues to professional and lay audiences. He regularly delivers presentations to various kinds of audiences and has written and conducted trainings on presentation skills. He served as a technical specailst for the Indian Forest Management Assessment Team -IV, completed this summer. He is author of 5 books and is a Fellow of the Society of American Foresters.
