Born and raised in California, Peter received his B.S. and M.S. (Wildland Resources Sciences) from the University of California at Berkeley and a PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara (Geography). The early portion of his career he worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services in California, Oregon, and Hawaii on endangered species conservation. He transitioned to the Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station to work on land management challenges in forested environments, particularly in the Sierra Nevada. Peter's background is in wildlife ecology, biogeography, forest ecology, and landscape management.
