Samuel Blumenfeld is a Masters of Science in Natural Resources student at NC State University. His thesis project evaluates the economic feasibility of growing hybrid poplar in western North Carolina, which a specific emphasis on salvaging economic losses on Christmas tree farms ravaged by the fungal pathogen Phytophthora root rot. Additionally, he is creating an enterprise budget economic tool for the regional Christmas tree industry to further assist growers in the face of this threat He previously worked as an undergraduate researcher for NC State's Tree Improvement Program, working on greenhouse and field trials for the Southeast's largest genetically improved loblolly pine research co-op. His career goals are to optimize economic and ecological objectives for landscape-level natural resource management.
