Urban sprawl is linked to forest fragmentation and wildfire incidences. With future predictions of a warmer planet, concern over wildfires is expected to be exponential. Quantifying consequences of wildfires on urban forests is crucial to understanding wildfire dynamics regarding fuel load, vegetation health, aerosol release and movement in the atmosphere.
Learning Objectives:
identify and map key areas that were affected by recent California wildfires
assess the extent of burn severity in Sonoma County using Normalized Burn Ration index between 2018 and 2022.
understand the impacts of wildfires on vegetation health and recovery process post fire events
understand wilfire dynamics and their impacts on vegetation
assess extent of annual wildfires in California and their relationships to urban sprawl
explore policies on urban wildfires esspecially prevention and management strategies
