Oak Wilt Further North? Examining Vectors, Spring Phenology, and Potential Risk across Upper Michigan/Canada

Objectives are to evaluate timing and relationships between host phenology, nitidulid beetle vectors, and environmental factors potentially limiting oak wilt progression north. As these factors are impacted by human movement of materials and climate change, a better understanding of northern expansion risk is critical for oak wilt prevention.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the current range of oak wilt disease and general disease life cycle
  • Describe how nitidulid beetles are captured in multiple trap types, including how trees are artificially wounded to attract these insects
  • Recognize some oak wilt vector species names in a community list and know the times of year they are most active
  • Discuss oak wilt spring budbreak phenology in relationship to timing of nitidulid beetle capture in traps and artificial wounds across the northern landscape.
