Student University of Georgia Athens, Georgia, United States
Unusual protuberances, or bumps, have been observed on the bark of American beeches (Fagus grandifolia) across their native range. The cause may be fungal, and we are working to understand the basis of bump formation through inoculation trials, along with the possible relation to tree health.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize the atypical bark morphology of American beech, referred to as "bumpy beech."
Upon completion, participant will be able to explain the efforts at the University of Georgia to understand the cause and implications of the atypical bark morphology.
